Base grinds, edge angles, structure, waxing and the details that bring skis back to life.
Why Your Skis Don’t Feel the Same Anymore
There’s a gradual decline that happens to every pair of skis. It’s so gradual that most skiers don’t notice it happening.
The skis stop gripping quite as well.
They feel slower.
Less precise.
Harder to trust on firmer snow.
Often people think:
“I probably just need a wax.”
But usually there’s a lot more going on underneath.
At gnomes [the ski experts] we regularly see skis that are well overdue for a full workshop service — and the longer they’re left, the more material we need to remove to bring them back to peak performance.
Here’s what actually goes into a proper ski service.
Base Grinding & Flattening
One of the biggest things that changes over time is the flatness of the ski base.
Skis can become:
- convex (high in the middle)
- concave (railed edges)
- uneven through repeated wear
When this happens, the ski becomes unpredictable and difficult to edge consistently.
A precision base grind restores the ski to a flat, consistent surface again.
This is the foundation of a high-performance tune.
Side Edging & Edge Angles
Sharp edges matter — but so do the angles.
Different edge bevels dramatically change how a ski behaves:
- grip on hardpack
- turn initiation
- forgiveness
- responsiveness
Over time, edges become rounded, inconsistent, and damaged from rocks, rust, and general wear.
Our workshop resets and sharpens edges using precise angle guides and finishing processes designed to create clean, consistent edge hold.
Ceramic Disc Finishing
This is one of those details many skiers never see — but it makes a huge difference.
After cutting edges, we finish them using ceramic disc technology to polish and refine the edge.
The result:
- smoother feel
- cleaner grip
- less drag
- longer-lasting sharpness
It’s one of the finishing touches that separates a quick tune from a premium workshop service.
Base Structure
That subtle pattern in the ski base isn’t just cosmetic.
It’s called structure, and it plays a massive role in how skis glide.
Structure helps channel water away from the base while skiing, reducing suction and improving speed and consistency in different snow conditions.
Over time, structure wears away.
During servicing, we cut fresh structure back into the base to restore glide and performance.
Waxing
Wax isn’t just about speed.
A properly waxed ski:
- glides better
- feels smoother
- protects the base
- improves durability
Dry skis create friction and feel sluggish on snow.
Regular hot waxing keeps the base healthy and performing properly throughout the season.
The Biggest Mistake We See
The most common issue we see?
People waiting too long.
The longer skis are left:
- the drier the base becomes
- the more edge damage develops
- the more uneven the ski gets
That means more material has to be removed during servicing to restore the ski properly.
Regular servicing keeps skis performing better for longer — and actually helps extend their lifespan.
A Proper Service Changes Everything
A freshly tuned ski feels:
- smoother
- quicker edge to edge
- more confidence inspiring
- faster
- easier to ski
A lot of customers are genuinely shocked how different their skis feel after a full workshop service.
And honestly — that’s the fun part for us.
